Medicinal Music on 26-string African kora for Hospice

As most of you know from the last letter, I’ve been playing music for hospice patients for many years now. This experience continues to be a humbling and rewarding one in many ways. One of those ways is when it becomes so clear, again and again, just how powerful music can be as a form of medicine.

In many cases, I’ve witnessed relief of great pain, depression and anxiety. Sometimes the relief is only momentary, or for an hour or so, but sometimes there have been considerable shifts in patients that I’ve been able to see more regularly. Even though they still may be on their way towards death, they somehow find what I can only describe as a kind of reconciliation in themselves.

One gentleman, who I had the distinct pleasure to play for, began reciting some of the most profound things just off the cuff, one of which I was able to remember.
He said,

“Light is always looking for a home
and when it finds a place to dwell
it illuminates all in its presence.”

I thought, Wow. Something is happening here that is much bigger than just playing music, especially after his son noticed this shift and mentioned such poetic incantations were not his nature. It goes way beyond entertainment, when someone receives the music in such a way. It becomes a means to heal, a means to tether us to something greater, something comforting and timeless.

Tom Rossi – composer, producer, songwriter

June 23rd, 2009 Tom Rossi No comments
Tom Rossi is a composer, producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, whose musical style is indeed a global mosaic, a border-dissolving symphony of tones and beats and harmonies from Africa and Asia and the Middle East, South America and the Caribbean and Brooklyn, USA.
Rossi himself was born in Texas, raised in Massachusetts, and went to college in the Pacific Northwest, but a moment of transformation came in a village of unpaved roads and mud huts in Togo, where Rossi grasped the raw psychotropic power of music in voodoo ceremonies.
Already an accomplished guitarist, Rossi kicked his polyglot education into a high gear. He went to Ghana to enroll in a drum and dance school run by the master percussionist Mustapha Tetty Addy.
After returning from further expeditions to Brazil, Cuba and Turkey, Rossi released his world music debut record, Salma Har, in 2005. The record was featured with an interview on BBC/PRI’s “The World” with acclaimed Lisa Mullins, NPR’s “Echoes” with John Diliberto, as well as tracks played on Continental Airlines in-flight world music channel and NPR’s “Talk of the Nation”.
As the founder of Salma Har Productions LLC, Rossi has produced and performed on several albums spanning the genres from Rock to Ambient. He has composed the music and performed in POON, the off-broadway urban dance spectacle choreographed and directed by Jordana Che Toback, as well as scoring soundtracks for Anna Getty and several wellness DVD’s for the Mayo Clinic and healthy lifestyle giant, Gaiam.
